Cultivating the Future of Food
NexGen Kai empowers communities across Aotearoa through hands-on aquaponics education that combines traditional kai knowledge with sustainable food production.
What We Do
Our Vision is to Establish Community Aquaponic Gardens Across New Zealand
NexGen Kai was born from a simple yet powerful idea, to create hubs of learning and sustainable food production in communities nationwide. These spaces will be places where people can:
- Learn about Aquaponics and sustainable farming practices.
- Grow fresh, organic produce right in their own neighbourhoods.
- Connect with others who share a passion for the environment and healthy living.
By bringing people together and empowering them with knowledge, we’re laying the foundation for a more sustainable future—one garden at a time.
Our Mission and Objectives
At the core of everything we do are these guiding principles:
- Community-Centric. We’re building Aquaponic Garden facilities that serve as hubs for learning and sustainable food production.
- Educational. We provide hands-on opportunities for individuals and groups to engage with sustainable practices and environmental education.
- Sustainable. We’re committed to promoting sustainable food production and raising awareness about the importance of locally grown, organic kai.
- Vocational Training. We’re creating pathways for individuals to develop skills in Aquaponics and sustainable farming, preparing them for a future where these skills are essential.
- Collaborative. We work with schools, educational institutions, and other organizations to advance our shared goals of sustainability and community wellbeing.
Tailored aquaponics solutions for schools and communities.
Curriculum-aligned resources and hands-on training programs.
Facilitating public workshops to spread aquaponics knowledge.
Technical mentoring and remote support to ensure success.

A Model for Success: Kaikōura High School
Our pilot at Kaikōura High School demonstrates aquaponics' power to transform education. We worked closely with the school to design and build a system, providing hands-on learning for students and professional development for teachers.
The project has sparked enthusiastic student engagement and created a living lab for science, technology, and environmental studies. It serves as our proof of concept for expanding this impactful program across Aotearoa.
